SIXTEEN

MILLS

The afternoon trickled by, and with it, the rain returned, hurtling at the window. Clouds drifted across the sky, casting the office in a gloomy light. Fry and I came and went, fetching teas and coffees to keep us going. Every now and then, one of us got up and walked around, went to look through Mooring’s belongings again, and then came back with nothing new to find.

Fry had managed to speak to someone at the art institute in Florence, which turned out to be fairly useful. Whilst Mooring had never landed himself in trouble with the school or the Italian authorities, he had been, up until now, a regular benefactor to the school. He sent money on a regular basis, was the go-to man to ask for support when new equipment or supplies were needed, and had sent some of his collection over to the school. One interesting thing we had learnt through the brief conversation was that the only request Mooring had made was that his collection be placed alongside the works of Sidney Angove. They had been friends, we were told, but nobody knew anything more than that. It had been some years since anyone who had known both men had worked at the institute, but it had been worth our attempts at poor Italian.

Since then, we hadn’t had as much luck. Devi’s notes would have been more than enough for her to write a brief article about Mooring’s life, but they weren’t enough to push us towards any possible lines of inquiry. My thoughts returned continuously to Sidney Angove. There wasn’t much that we could learn about him, either. His artwork appeared to be the only sign that he had ever actually lived. Beyond that, there was nothing else.

“We haven’t heard from Johnson for a bit,” I realised at one point. “I’m guessing she’s had no luck with the hotel’s CCTV.”

“I’m guessing the same,” Fry said, but she stood up and left the office to check in with our DC all the same. She was only gone a moment and returned with a slight frown on her face.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“She’s not at her desk.”

“It is ten past five,” I pointed out. “We should have gone by now as well.”

Fry stayed standing, her hand reaching for the jacket slung over the back of her chair.

“You’re not moving,” she noted.

I hadn’t moved. I was still at my computer with numerous tabs open, a pen in one hand, and the other hand hovering over the mouse.

“I might stay a bit longer. I’m focused now. If I walk away, I might lose it.”

I looked up at her and then over at the window. “I’ll drop you home first and come back.”

“No, no.” She waved at me to stay seated. “I can stay and help you work.”

“It’s fine. Go home to Beans. I probably won’t be much longer.”

“You sure?”

“I’m sure. I’ll drive you, though, I’m not making you walk in that weather.”

“I’ll get Fairley to give me a lift. She’s still here,” Fry said.
